TEMPO.CO, Singapore - Indonesia has won a gold medal in badminton at the ASEAN School Games (ASG) 2017 in Singapore today.
Men’s singles shuttler Nur Yahya Velani grabbed the gold medal after beating his compatriot Handoko Wijayanto 21-14, 21-15 in the final.
Indonesia won a silver medal in women’s doubles after losing the final to Malaysian pair Toh Ee Wei and Perly Tan 18-21, 18-21.
As such, Indonesian badminton team collected one gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
It fails to meet the target set by the Youth and Sports Ministry, i.e. three badminton gold medals.
Indonesia badminton team coach Luluk Hadiyanto has acknowledged the failure.
Luluk said that the squad who played at the ASG 2017 comprise of back-ups to the team who will be competing at the Asian Junior Championship in Jakarta on July 22-30.
Having won a badminton gold medal, Indonesia has so far won a total of 20 gold medals.
